Small Group Reading Intervention: Preparation Planning Guide

Small Group Reading Intervention: Preparation Planning Guide

Small reading groups move fast. In a short session you might review sounds or words, read a passage, practice fluency and check understanding. That pace only works if everything is ready before students sit down. Planning reading group preparation as scheduled tasks turns a morning scramble into a two-minute setup.

What reading groups typically need

  • Texts: passages, decodable books or leveled readers chosen for the group.
  • Word work: word cards, sound cards, letter tiles, word lists.
  • Practice materials: fluency passages, recording sheets, whiteboards.
  • Tools: timer, pointers, highlighters, pencils.
  • Teacher materials: lesson plan, any program guide your school uses.

Follow your school’s chosen program and your team’s plan for what each group uses.

Prepare in the right order

Reading prep has a natural sequence, and each step depends on the one before it:

  1. Choose the text and focus for each session.
  2. Make word cards or other materials for that focus.
  3. Copy passages and recording sheets.
  4. Organize everything into a folder or tub per group.
  5. Set up the space just before the session.

Schedule each as its own task, dated so it finishes before the next one needs it. See task dependencies for why order matters.

Plan by the week, not the day

If a group meets several times a week, choose all the week’s texts in one sitting and do one copy run. Then each day’s prep is just “pull the folder and check it”. A sample week for one reading group:

WhenTaskPriority
Thu (week before)Prep – choose passages for group A next weekHigh
FriPrep – make word cards for group AMedium
Mon 7:45 AMPrep – copy group A passages for the weekHigh
Mon / Wed / Fri 9:30 AMT2 – Reading fluency group A (Room 12)High
Fri 2:30 PMFollow-up – reset group A folderLow

Use a folder per group

A labeled folder or tub for each group, containing that week’s text, cards and sheets, is the simplest system there is. Your preparation task becomes “fill the folder”, and your setup task becomes “grab the folder”. Label folders by group letter, never by student names.

Keep a short note with the session

RTI Scheduler’s note field is ideal for reading group reminders: “Bring timer and sound cards” or “Use library table, Room 12 has testing”. Keep notes about materials and places, not about students’ reading levels or scores; those belong in your school’s approved system.

Quick checklist before each group

  • Text chosen and copied
  • Word work materials ready
  • Recording sheets and pencils in the folder
  • Timer and tools packed
  • Space confirmed
